About the project
World War II touched the lives of each and every American. Service and Sacrifice presents the variety of achievements, sacrifices, and hardships experienced by a spectrum of Americans. Japanese Americans fought bravely while their families were interned, women struggled for meaningful ways to contribute to the war effort, and African Americans facing racism at home and a segregated army, fought for respect as well as against America’s enemies.
Though a staunch isolationist himself, Joseph Kennedy’s children served as flyers, sailors, and nurses overseas. Like so many American families of the time, they suffered loss and had the arc of their lives forever altered.
The exhibit highlights WWII’s lasting impact on American social and political life. It features activities and artifacts, archival video footage, and images from the National Archive’s vast collections, to bring home to visitors the meaning of service, and the cost of fighting for principles and common cause.
