National Mounted Warrior Museum
About the project
The National Mounted Warrior Museum showcases the rich history and achievements of America’s cavalry soldiers. Located adjacent to Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), the museum highlights the 3d Cavalry Regiment and 1st Cavalry Division. Working with the Army’s curators, SFD designed 14,000 sq. ft. of exhibits for the museum’s new purpose-built facility. The building’s atrium and gallery exhibits feature the display of thirteen large-scale transportation and fighting vehicles in powerful evocative settings, augmented by AV and lighting special effects. Vehicles include a Huey helicopter, Sherman tank, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, MRAP, Stryker, and others.
Throughout the exhibits, visitors are provided with hands-on opportunities such as deciphering codes, viewing through an Abrams Tank periscope’s augmented view, or hefting a cavalry saber. AV projections, video monitors, and ambient audio installations throughout the exhibits offer visitors historic footage and personal accounts of the experiences of American cavalrymen and women.
The National Mounted Warrior Museum provides visitors and soldiers stationed at Fort Cavazos with a deeper appreciation of the experience, legacy, and ongoing contributions of our nation’s mounted warriors.
