WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS MUSEUM
DISCOVER HISTORY CENTER

About the project

Based on a master plan provided by SFD, the lower galleries of Washington’s Headquarters Museum are devoted to interpreting Morristown’s role in the War for Independence. As a counterbalance to the object-oriented galleries on the upper level, the Discover History Center takes an experiential approach to sharing the trials of General Washington as he struggled to keep his army together, healthy, and well-trained. It powerfully brings to life the suffering and sacrifices of Continental soldiers during two terrible winters encamped in Morristown.

A wealth of hands-on and electronic activities, multimedia presentations, and immersive environments all serve to engage a range of visitors of differing ages and background knowledge. The gallery’s graphics and finishes establish an inviting and playful, yet respectful setting for interpreting a moment in history when our early Nation’s survival hung in the balance.
